AcuFlex: First-of-Its-Kind Clinician-Ready Movement Assessment Platform
“Built a HIPAA-compliant physical therapy analytics and movement assessment system using computer vision, cloud database pipelines, and secure real-time dashboards.”

1. Project Background
SAE Orthopedics, a leading physical therapy provider, required a reliable, clinician-facing system to automate movement assessment and track patient rehabilitation progress over time. Traditionally, movement analysis was done manually by physical therapists using visual heuristics and paper-based tracking, which was prone to bias and lacked objective, quantitative progress metrics.
2. The Challenge
The primary challenge was designing a system capable of accurately capturing and evaluating human joint angles and posture in real-time from a simple tablet or smartphone camera, without requiring expensive specialized hardware or wearable sensors. Furthermore, because the application handles patient health data, the entire infrastructure had to comply strictly with HIPAA regulations, including end-to-end encryption, robust audit logs, and granular access controls.
3. Our Solution & Approach
Syntrix Systems developed AcuFlex, an innovative physical therapy analytics platform. We integrated custom pose estimation models based on MediaPipe and PyTorch directly into a responsive Next.js web application. Video streams from patient assessments are processed on the client side, and the calculated skeletal joint coordinates are securely sent to a backend API built with Go. The API maps these coordinates into kinematic models, generating instant, precise movement reports. The data is stored in a heavily encrypted PostgreSQL database hosted on AWS, utilizing row-level security and KMS encryption key rotations.
4. The Results & Impact
AcuFlex revolutionized patient assessment at SAE Orthopedics. Clinicians now complete assessments 40% faster, giving them more time to focus on individualized patient care. The objective telemetry has increased patient retention by 25%, as patients can clearly visualize their biomechanical improvements via interactive line graphs and playback overlays. The entire platform was certified as 100% HIPAA-compliant by a third-party security auditor.
““AcuFlex has completely transformed how our therapists evaluate patient progress. The objective feedback gives our patients the confidence and motivation they need to stay committed to their recovery plans.”
