EduStream: Enterprise Virtual Learning Architecture for Higher Education
“Built a highly resilient learning platform featuring interactive live video classrooms, student engagement metrics, and custom exam proctoring software.”
1. Project Background
Vanguard University required a robust, modern digital learning ecosystem. Their existing learning management system (LMS) struggled to support high-concurrent virtual classes, lacked native interactive tools (like collaborative whiteboards or breakout rooms), and provided no visual insights into student engagement and attendance tracking.
2. The Challenge
Building a high-throughput video system that could scale gracefully to support thousands of concurrent students during exams and lectures was paramount. Additionally, the university required a custom, secure browser lockdown and proctoring system to prevent academic dishonesty during online exams, while ensuring it worked across Chromebooks, Windows, and Mac systems without native app installations.
3. Our Solution & Approach
We designed and developed EduStream. The video architecture utilizes an autoscaling group of Jitsi Meet and Zoom Video SDK nodes, coordinated by a custom orchestrator API built with Node.js and Redis. The client-side application is built using Next.js, featuring an interactive classroom environment with chat, screen-sharing, collaborative canvas board, and instant polling. We developed an AI-assisted proctoring extension using WebGL and TensorFlow.js directly in the browser to detect secondary screens, unauthorized movement, or missing candidates, logging events to a secure backend database.
4. The Results & Impact
EduStream successfully hosted over 15,000 active students during its first semester. Server auto-scaling handled peak exam traffic smoothly, and the custom browser proctoring system flagged unauthorized activities with 98% accuracy. Faculty reported a 30% increase in class engagement metrics due to the interactive polls and breakout features.
““EduStream provided a virtual campus that actually feels like a classroom. The student engagement data has allowed our instructors to adapt their teaching styles in real-time.”
