SmartGrid: Predictive Asset Maintenance Framework using IoT Edge Telemetry
“Deployed machine learning models on edge devices to monitor wind turbine performance and identify anomalies before structural failure occurs.”
1. Project Background
AltEnergy Group manages vast fields of wind turbines in remote locations. Maintenance of these turbines is historically reactive—technicians are sent out only after a turbine stops spinning or experiences catastrophic mechanical failure, which results in expensive emergency repairs and extended grid downtime.
2. The Challenge
Wind turbines are fitted with hundreds of sensors measuring vibration, temperature, speed, and voltage. Transmitting all this raw telemetry continuously to the cloud is impossible due to extremely limited cellular connectivity in remote areas. The client needed a solution capable of running machine learning models on-site directly on low-power edge gateways to identify early signs of wear and tear.
3. Our Solution & Approach
We designed a predictive maintenance framework using Edge AI. We optimized deep learning anomaly detection models using TensorFlow Lite and deployed them on edge industrial gateways (Raspberry Pi/NVIDIA Jetson) mounted inside each turbine. These models ingest raw high-frequency sensor readings, analyze vibrations, and calculate an overall health index score in real-time. If the health index falls below a critical threshold, the gateway sends a compressed, prioritized alert over satellite/LoRaWAN to the central Azure cloud database.
4. The Results & Impact
The SmartGrid edge system changed the maintenance culture at AltEnergy. Predictive alerts let crews fix minor bearing and gear issues weeks before they cause failure. Reactive maintenance costs dropped by 32%, and turbine operational uptime increased by 18%, saving the grid millions of dollars in lost power generation.
““Catching a bearing failure before it locks up our gearboxes has saved us hundreds of thousands in crane rentals alone. This Edge AI system is an absolute game-changer.”
